By Tina Hesman Saey. October 20, at am. In a large study of more thanmen and women in the United States, United Kingdom and Sweden, researchers discovered four genetic variants that occur more often in people who indicated on questionnaires that they had had same-sex sexual partners.
Throughout history, the major civilizations and religions condemned homosexuality. Is the historic stance against homosexuality merely one of prejudice? Is homosexual behavior really as harmless as gays and these health associations assert?
The term gay is frequently used as a synonym for homosexual; female homosexuality is often referred to as lesbianism. At different times and in different cultureshomosexual behaviour has been variously approved of, tolerated, punished, and banned. Homosexuality was not uncommon in ancient Greece and Romeand the relationships between adult and adolescent males in particular have become a chief focus of Western classicists in recent years.

I could quote dozens of different statistics to address the question of how many people are homosexual—there is no consistent figure. Nor is there a consistent pattern of behavior that allows easy or clear definitions or demographics. By exploring a particular problem in the history of gender, sexuality, and homosexuality in early twentieth-century American culture, I hope to demonstrate how radically different the understandings of sex, gender, and sexuality — and even the conceptual boundaries among them — were only three generations ago in American culture, and thus to argue for the importance of historicizing these categories. Not, I should add, between prostitutes and lesbians, which others have explored. Although this linkage was common in the United States, as I will show, its best known manifestations were British.
